{"id":147829,"date":"2026-01-20T17:43:55","date_gmt":"2026-01-20T22:43:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/?p=147829"},"modified":"2026-01-20T17:43:58","modified_gmt":"2026-01-20T22:43:58","slug":"gym-is-one-place-ai-hasnt-won-over-les-mills-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/gym-is-one-place-ai-hasnt-won-over-les-mills-report\/","title":{"rendered":"The Gym Is One Place AI Hasn\u2019t Won Over, Report Finds"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-gymgoers-may-be-happy-to-track-their-workouts-with-tech-but-they-don-t-want-artificial-intelligence-to-replace-human-trainers-and-coaches-per-a-new-report-from-les-mills\">Gymgoers may be happy to track their workouts with tech, but they don&#8217;t want artificial intelligence to replace human trainers and coaches, per a new report from Les Mills<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly one in three Americans was reported to use a wearable device to track their health and fitness, according to a Health Information National Trends Survey in 2023 \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/news\/2023\/study-reveals-wearable-device-trends-among-us-adults\">figure<\/a> that is likely higher now, with devices like the Oura Ring capturing the attention of younger consumers and <a href=\"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/oura-11b-valuation-900m-funding-investor-confidence-in-preventive-health\/\">commanding eye-watering valuations<\/a>.<br><br>But for all our <a href=\"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/ces-2026-ai-powered-health-fitness-wearables\/\">tech toys<\/a> and data obsessions, gymgoers have a message for AI: hands off our trainers.<br><br>That\u2019s according to Les Mills\u2019 newly released 2026 Global Fitness Report, which found that just 10% of consumers globally prefer AI workout guidance over a human coach.\u00a0<br><br>The group fitness leader drew its findings from more than 10,000 consumers across five continents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the numbers, 52% of respondents leaned human-first, with 31% strongly preferring a real trainer and another 21% leaning that way, for the personal connection and expertise that come with human interaction. The remaining 37% said they were undecided.<br><br>Perhaps most encouraging for both budding and seasoned trainers is that even Gen Z and Millennials prefer human coaches, despite their well-documented affinity for tech. In fact, they appear to be the most resistant. Les Mills found that just 11% of 16-27-year-olds and 9% of 28-40-year-olds prefer AI-generated content.<br><br>Bryce Hastings, Les Mills\u2019 head of research, attributes that pushback to something AI still struggles to replicate, at least for now: real human energy.<br><br>\u201cTechnology is shaping fitness in countless ways, but nothing beats the buzz of a live class and these findings show we remain social animals when it comes to working out,\u201d Hastings said. \u201cExercising with others maximizes \u2018the group effect\u2019, which our research has shown leads to increases in a person\u2019s enjoyment, satisfaction and exertion.\u201d<br><br>But that is not to discount the idea entirely.
