Peterson has spent decades navigating the pendulum swings of the industry, from grind-it-out workouts to today\u2019s recovery-forward, longevity-minded moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/gunnarfitness\/?hl=en\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">Peterson<\/a> sat down with Athletech News to discuss why recovery still has limits, the technology he thinks has the most potential for training and his wellness non-negotiables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recovery-is-important-but-you-need-to-do-the-work-too\"><strong>Recovery Is Important &#8230; But You Need To Do the Work, Too<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Peterson is unequivocal that recovery is now a core pillar of training. But he\u2019s equally quick to caution against using it as an excuse to avoid hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRecovery is a huge pillar,\u201d he told ATN. \u201cYou can\u2019t overstate the importance, although when people use it as a passive approach, sometimes I throw a flag on the play. That\u2019s cool if you\u2019re recovering, but if you\u2019re not training and just recovering, at some point it\u2019s time to put on your big-boy, big-girl pants and do the actual work. You can\u2019t recover from nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Peterson, recovery only works when it\u2019s paired with intention. That means understanding whether someone is truly training hard enough to need recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAre they using it as an off day and just plowing through their normal routine, or are they using recovery protocols: Epsom salt baths, cryo, red light, sauna, percussive devices, active recovery, walks?\u201d he said. \u201cThere are so many ways to do it, but you have to approach it the right way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked which science-backed modality is influencing him most right now, Peterson immediately spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/red-light-therapy-research-illuminates-benefits\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"108650\">red-light therapy<\/a>. The trainer announced a partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/solbasium.com\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"(opens in a new tab)\">Solbasium<\/a>, a red light and recovery tech company, late last year. Peterson described using red light not only for pain management, but as an everyday recovery and wellness tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe wavelengths, the way they\u2019re dialed from a scientific standpoint; it\u2019s not slapshot stuff,\u201d Peterson said. \u201cThey\u2019re building equipment that holds up in real training environments. They\u2019re pushing the envelope, and they\u2019re staying ahead of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-train-with-effort-amp-intelligence\"><strong>How To Train With Effort &amp; Intelligence <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of finding the right workouts to drive improvements, Peterson draws a clear distinction between duration and effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuration is very different from intensity,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can tell me it\u2019s a 20-minute workout. If you\u2019re going flat-out, there are benefits. But if it\u2019s five minutes of warm-up, then you\u2019re kind of messing around with no plan, and suddenly it\u2019s over, that\u2019s hard to get much out of.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium_large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"788\" height=\"909\" src=\"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Image_20260205_120240_818-788x909.webp\" alt=\"Gunnar Peterson curling a dumbbell\" class=\"wp-image-149937\" style=\"width:489px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Image_20260205_120240_818-788x909.webp 788w, https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Image_20260205_120240_818-1180x1362.webp 1180w, https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Image_20260205_120240_818-428x494.webp 428w, https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Image_20260205_120240_818-1331x1536.webp 1331w, https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/Image_20260205_120240_818.webp 1733w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 788px) 100vw, 788px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">credit: Gunnar Peterson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The issue, he added, usually isn\u2019t time constraints, but lack of structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t have a plan and they just rush into the gym already short on time, it\u2019s really hard for them to get much out of that,\u201d Peterson said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peterson\u2019s programming starts with client goals, but then shifts to ensuring the workouts are balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf someone is obsessed with one body part, like glutes, glutes, glutes, I\u2019ll say, \u2018How about the fact that your posture is kyphotic and you have very little musculature in your upper back?\u2019\u201d he explained. \u201cWe\u2019ll still focus on glutes, but we have to strike a balance between upper and lower extremity instead of just hammering one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-consistency-is-key\"><strong>Consistency Is Key<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the New Year&#8217;s resolution <a href=\"https:\/\/athletechnews.com\/how-gyms-are-keeping-members-after-the-january-rush-why-february-matters-more\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"148304\">Quitter\u2019s Day<\/a> has come and gone, Peterson sees more damage done by subtle disengagement than dramatic failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people stay in their comfort zone,\u201d he said. \u201cNot every workout has to be fire and brimstone, but just try. I think people die a million little deaths in their workouts. You quit a little &#8230; here, a little there. Red light therapy. Adequate protein. Adequate hydration. Adequate sleep.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;And get your steps,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Seven to 10,000. People say, \u2018I can\u2019t do that.\u2019 Shut up.
